Are you self-employed? Do you consider yourself to be a freelancer? I left my full-time job about 5 years ago to stay home with my boys. I enjoy what I do and love the flexibility. I’ve had people ask me before why I work from home, if it’s worth it and do I get tired of it. Working for home, for me, is 100% worth it. I love what I do and I love being able to take care of my children, not having to worry about child care.
It’s not all great though, it’s hard when you’re first starting out and there are dry patches along the way too. Here is a great infographic that highlights some of the pitfalls (and high points) of freelancing:

It’s pretty shocking to me that the average freelancer has gotten stiffed for $6,000. That just goes to show you the importance of contracts, deposits and watermarks. If you’re a freelancer or self-employed doing contract-type work have you had a problem with non-payment? How did you address the issue?

i had problems now and then.
most times people paid when i talked directly to them. once one tried to cheat me by claiming he had already paid which wasn.t true. before i could sue him he lost his biz, so it was worst case.
i won.t wait that long anymore in future if somebody tries to cheat me.

Sorry to hear that, Helen. It’s so important to be clear about payment, deposits and holding work until it’s paid for in full. I think we all have had to deal with it at one point or another.
